Gentle on My Mind

In the early hours of the morning, as my younger self lay in bed, I would listen to the tender sounds of our house awakening, comforting sounds that I can replay today.

It was the gentle conversation between my mom and dad as they sat at the kitchen table that eased my brain, erasing any shadows lurking in the dark. I could never actually hear what was being said, but the words were as gentle as the way they stirred their coffee, almost in unison.

I often floated in the spaces betwixt my dreams and the murmuring house, where fanciful imagery and reality blended into blankets of sounds. But sometimes I actually heard a whispery goodbye, sending my dad off to work, followed by my mom's slippers brushing the floor as she slow walked back to bed. Soon the house would drift back into its deep quiet sleep and so did I.

Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Let Our Thoughts Float as Gently as the Lily Pad

Do everything with gentleness, with kindness, with reverence.
That is how grace moves.

My coming to faith did not always start with a leap but rather a series of staggers from what seemed like one safe place to another. Like lily pads, round and green, these places summoned and then held me up while I grew.

Each prepared me for the next leaf on which I would land, and in this way, I moved across the swamp of doubt and fear.

We are the lily pads, gently holding up each other.

    1. My brothers reminded me of the sound of coffee percolating, not to mention the aroma of fresh coffee. The part that truly got to my brother was the sound of mom’s slippers. How wonderfully lasting —- those gentle moments.

I remember taking those Sunday drives. We loved getting in the car and just driving anywhere. My Dad liked to see cows on a hillside. My siblings and I still say, “Look cows on a hillside,” when we pass some. We took such pleasure in those simple pleasures with our family. Life was simpler….it was good. Thanks for the reminder.

    1. Thank you for sharing. There was something about that pastime, that Sunday drive, with the family together enjoying the landscape, the cows, etc. And I recall that was way before fast food restaurants— eating in the car was not even a glimmer of a thought.
