The Song of the Mountains

Skiers talk about hearing the “song of the mountains”. It happened to me. Just once. I will never forget it.
Lucky me, to have lived in beautiful Colorado when lift tickets in Aspen and Vail were only $5. November-April weekends were made for skiing.

My friends and I would drive over Loveland Pass (later through Eisenhower Tunnel) to our favorite mountain. Could be Breckenridge, A-Basin (for spring skiing), Lionshead, Vail or the back bowls of Snowmass, Aspen.
The snowfall began early that morning in Snowmass. No wind. Just large flakes drifting steadily all day long giving us layers and layers of what we dreamed of: fresh powder.

It was the best of conditions. Each turn kicked up large crests of snow. No stopping for lunch. Couldn't miss any of this. By mid-afternoon, I was gliding through 2 feet or more of weightless snow.
Those who relish nature and the outdoors know about crossing a momentary plane where time as we know it ceases, and all of creation exists simultaneously. The fifth dimension.

For skiers, it is when fear of a total wipeout is eliminated, and we relinquish mind control. Lines blur. One new reality: you and the mountain.

I was nearing it. My knees, hidden in the deep powder, had to be loose like independent pistons, allowing the mountainside to modulate them over the rise and fall of moguls (hills and bumps) I could not see. I gave myself to it. Total trust.

It was then, moving with the mountain, feeling it, flying with it, enveloped in a swirl of white that I moved into what I can only describe as the "frequency of the mountain", riding a timeless song that claimed me.
Perhaps the poets and songwriters understand . . .

"Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord."

----Leonard Cohen
Bereshit (pronounced ber-sheet) In the Beginning,

In the beginning, there was song. The Hebrew word for song, “shir” (שיר), is embedded in the first word of Genesis. One theory is that God did not speak the words, "Let there be light!" He sang them. The Song of Creation.

Movement, vibration and song are at the core of our existence and part of everything we know. Without vibrations, matter would fall apart.
All Life is a Vibration
Einstein said all life is a vibration, movements in tune with infinite rhythms.

Every atom in nature emits a unique frequency, its own song. Interestingly, each carbon atom produces the same harmonic scale as the Gregorian Chant. ----- Mark Batterson
There is no difference between a cathedral and a science lab.
In a cathedral people are singing to God.
In a science lab . . ..
God is singing to people.

----Anne Dillard
In the Key of Creation*: A Four Part Harmony

Rick Ruben, (The Creative Act: A Way of Being) speculates that the 7th day as written in Genesis has not yet come . . . that God is not resting . ... rather God is very active in our lives as the Great Conductor of a four-part harmony: Heaven, Earth, Nature, and Humanity, our ongoing Song of Creation.

What might that imply for you and me? Are we singing in the Key of Creation?
Creation's Overtones: Spontaneous Higher Vibrations

In my choral singing group, I was reminded about overtones: singing in harmony so perfect that new higher tones are created. In simpler terms, in the synergy of sound, 1 + 1 = 3.

I wondered about that in terms of our choral singing, so I asked, “What does that sound like?” Peggy Nicley, one of our lovely baritones, replied,

"Like Angels".
The Power of Higher Personal Vibrations

We have a personal vibration that radiates from us and that it changes depending on what we're thinking, feeling, and doing. The more you allow your soul to shine through you, the higher your personal vibrations.
They may produce overtones that can change the world.

We can wallow in the world's chaotic soup of frequencies and feel buffeted about helplessly, or you can determine what you want to emit. Penney Peirce.

In this world, our lives are in a perpetual search for higher vibrations. Let's create it together. "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them". Overtones of the Song of Creation.
If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.
                                 ~ Nikola Tesla
The Hills are Alive . . .With the Sound of Music
The mountains and the hills will break into shouts of joy before you, And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
—-Isaiah 55:12

Want to delve more deeply?

I hear you–why celebrate creation when the world is full of conflict, wars, divisiveness, destruction, angry finger-pointing and fears? If we accept that creation is ongoing, then the human part of the four-part song needs to elevate the overtones of you and me. Overtones of generosity, compassion, understandings.

History teaches us that humanity ultimately learns its lessons and advances accordingly. What if our primitive existence was the verge of a giant step forward toward enlightenment and soul recognition? This was beautiful. I copied down a few quotes to share with some special friends. I love the quote about a cathedral and a science lab. I have never skied but you made it sound beautiful and amazing and brave. You have a beautiful soul, my friend.

    1. Carol, Thank you for sharing this. The one about the cathedral and science lab is my favorite too. My daughter and I were reminiscing about skiing in Colorado. Great memories.

  2. Robin Houp says:

Gloria, what an uplifting of soul your words sent to me today! Taking deep breaths, feeling lighter by just having read the words you shared. Thank you🥰

    1. Thank you, Robin. So kind of you to take the time to comment. This post connected the dots for me from 40 years ago when I wondered about how such things. It was helpful reading thoughts from writers that perked my interest and imagination.

  3. Nancy E Buhrer says:

Gloria, absolutely gorgeous!! I loved this one– am not a skier but I could relate to everything you said with your beautiful descriptions– Nance

    1. Ah, so sweet, Nance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to walk together and share our experiences. Always a joy to see your name in the comments.

  4. Frank Lomanno says:

Thanks Gloria for bringing me back to my mountain holidays. I never did hear the “song of the mountains” mainly because I was always in a survivor mode. Always thought I wanted to live in Garmisch, an alpine town in Bavaria, Germany. It was like living in a postcard. Thanks for bringing back such fond memories.

    1. Frank, I too enjoyed reminiscing years of skiing. Something about living in or near mountains that fills me with a sense of home. No mountains here in Florida, though. They live in my heart. In an instant I am on a chair lift with such anticipation—the next run.

  5. Robert Gary Anckaitis says:

Absolutely beautiful Gloria. Thanks for including us in your mailings.
    See you in January.
    Bob and Kathy

    1. So nice of you to comment, Bob. I appreciate that. Hope you are enjoying your time up north with family and friends.

  6. Lori Pohlman says:

Thank you for this, Gloria. Your description of skiing is so alive. I can smell the snow! We sure love our glorious mountains, don’t we? So much beauty.

    1. Thank you, Lori. Yes, we love our mountains, both of us drawn to Lake Arrowhead. We skied Snow Valley—not quite Colorado, but still skiing. Close enough to make a few runs, then off to Staters. In Colorado, we’d stop in Georgetown to watch ski movies at a bar called The Slope. Ahhh, good times.

  7. Theola Sweeney says:

Love this teaching of energy and vibration – a beautifully done piece of work this month 🌸

    1. Thank you, Theola. I appreciate your comments. I know we are on the same “wave length”.
