January, Quiet Clarity

Thank you, January,
For letting me sink
Deep in my easy chair
Having a good think.
---g. hill
Calendar months have a way of folding into each other----

March thaws us into an April spring.
June warms us into playful July.
And September begins to color its way into October.

But December and January stand in contrast to each other. Suddenly, December lights are dimmed. A heavy overcoat now hangs on a hook by the front door that once held a wreath
.

Yet, they both stir; one the heart and the other the mind.

Thank you, January,
So opportune

For mind-body-spirit
To commune
Among stirrings

And questions
That nag and persist
,
Wondering
How it all fits,
----g. hill

How can we meld the marvelous with the mundane?
In my deep think, ignoring dishes in the sink,
Decorations once displayed, now in disarray.
Unceremoniously waiting to be packed away . . .

. . . Suddenly this thought: Maybe I ought
To save a few lights to hang on my heart.

Bells, bulbs, ornaments that glitter
Can glow in the heart, like transmitters
Of joy, of faith, of peace and good cheer,
Enough to last the whole long year.

Someday the inner light will shine forth from us, and it will be clear.
We will need no other light.
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe*, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
----Luke 5:26
Clarity is the moment parts of our lives fit together, and we bathe in awe, the mystical and the everyday. Then we will see without opening our eyes.
– Stephanie Banks.
"Turn on your heart light
Let it shine wherever you go
Let it make a happy glow
For all the world to see."
       ---Song lyrics, Neil Diamond
And, thank you, January,
For your quiet clarity
That exists.
Allowing
The pretzel in me
To gently untwist.
---g. hill
Every day I walk out into the world to be dazzled, then to be reflective.
----Mary Oliver

The Value of Awe: Did You Know????

From the book, AWE: The New Science Of Everyday Wonder, taking time to experience the AWE in nature, in each other and in the world. It slows the heart rate, helps with digestion and quiets the part of the brain where fear and anxiety might dominate our thoughts. It is simply “AWESOME” to do this every day.

Or just sink in your easy chair and have a good think.

*January: From the Latin, Ianuarius, the first month of the calendar year is named for the Roman God, Janus, depicted as two faces, one looking back and the other looking forward, often with a key opening of doors from the old to the new.

Peaceful , beautiful reflections of the December storm and the January peace!

    1. Thank you, Carol. Have you ever seen it snow in the panhandle? I know it’s rare.

Gloria: I love the pics that come along with your quotes and thoughts. Especially loved the thought about the coat replacing the wreath. I’ve always loved winter because i love the cold and the way it awakens your body when you are exposed to it either by a harsh wind or a quiet frozen morning when you walk amongst the icicles and frosted trees. The quiet of fresh snow and how it literally muffles sounds around your peaceful environment.

    1. John, I too love walking in quiet of fresh snow. I love how our ears seem to be more alert in the muffled sounds during a snowfall and also in the fog. Thank you for your comments. I almost deleted the part about coat replacing the wreath on a hook. Feedback certainly helps. While we live in a place without snow, I have plenty of wonderful memories. When my daughter takes her family to Vail, Colorado, I can almost smell the pines.
