There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres and there is geometry in each arc of a flower. ------ Pythagoras

I wrote this letter shortly after the birth of my first grandchild. Plato said geometry draws the soul towards truth. It did that for me while teaching math and geometry. I marvel in its beautiful artistry. And I became more than the teacher. I became the student in awe of nature’s designs and the hand that created it. And it continues . . .

Dear Lucas, My wish for you is to recognize perfection as it exists in the exquisite properties of nature's consummate designs. I offer you these relationships of points and lines, solids and planes, as you insert yourself into these truths that will shape your life.

CIRCLES: You are born within a circle of family and friends. As you grow, your circle will expand. You will need guidance, wisdom and a keen sense of inquiry to determine what will be in or out of you circle.

Rectangles and Squares (And the Golden Ratio): Four 90-degree angles formed by two sets of parallel lines. Each corner represents structures of integrity: honesty, hard work, humor and humility. As strong as they are, they can weaken, lean and go askew. You will be tested. Henry David Thoreau said a person is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone. Have a greater proportion of those in your circle who will help keep you upright.
Triangles: Only three angles and three sides? Did we lose something? You will face disappointments, setbacks and heartbreak. The question is how will you deal with loss? We ache. We grieve. But know this: the triangle is the strongest of polygons. Strength can be born from loss.

Planes: Invisible boundaries are part of our lives. Planes of existential thoughts are porous and often hard to see, which makes them so alluring and easy to cross. If you tread onto a dangerous zone, we will cross that plane and carry you back. Love finds a way. Love has the power to renew, to rescue. I know this because I have been rescued.

Parallel Lines: These lines are equidistant and abide by each other with persistence. I will be your parallel line, following you as your life takes shape. By definition, parallel lines never meet, yet astrophysicists say that in the arc of the universe, on another sphere, parallel lines eventually do meet . . .on that other sphere. And there we will meet again, on that highest magnificent dimension.

Mathematics is the language in which god speaks to people. -------Plato C

The laws of nature are but the mathematical thoughts of God. ------Euclid

The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring artistry in the work of His hands. ------ Psalm 19:1

I loved this. Nature is truly amazing. Only God could have created such beautiful perfect things for us to marvel at. I am going to pass your letter to Lucas on to my grandchildren. Thank you

Carol,
I am glad you like this enough to forward it. To be honest I was hesitant to post this. So many have an aversion math, yet I see it as perfectly beautiful.
