The Riddle of Self-Doubt

Sometimes I wake up in the morning before going off to a shoot, and I think, I can’t do this. I’m a fraud.
       ------Kate Winslet

Are you riddled with doubt as I am, as most of us are?

Every day feels like the first day and every day you think, “They’re going to fire me; I don’t know what I’m doing here; I don’t know how to do this; I don’t know why I’m here; I am a fraud. Everybody’s going to find out.
      ------Michelle Williams
Every September of my long teaching career, I would find myself encased in the darkness of self-doubt. I knew I could not say to my students, look at my past successes. Yesterday was done and I cannot lean on it. These students would have different needs.

Maybe self-doubt is a solitary vessel we ride toward our better tomorrow. Even though we can feel adrift and rudderless, alone and empty, doubt can propel us forward. Khalil Gibran wrote,

Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother.

Self-doubt circles us back to our primary questions, with new answers for tomorrow. Maybe the person we want to be is still in motion. Self-doubt keeps us seeking. The riddle of self-doubt is that we cannot soar without it.
      ------G. Hill
John Denver tried to capture the riddle of self-doubt in his song, "Looking for Space".

It's a sweet, sweet dream, sometimes I'm almost there.
Sometimes I fly like an eagle and sometimes I'm deep in despair.
       -----John Denver
Eagles Can Also Be Still, Pondering the Next Move
When I think that I'm moving, suddenly things stand still.
I'm afraid cause I think they always will.

John Denver Lyrics
"Looking For Space"

On the road of experience, I'm trying to find my own way.
Sometimes I wish that I could fly away.
When I think that I'm moving, suddenly things stand still.
I'm afraid cause I think they always will.
And I'm looking for space and to find out who I am, and I'm looking to know and understand.
It's a sweet, sweet dream, sometimes I'm almost there.
Sometimes I fly like an eagle and sometimes I'm deep in despair.

All alone in the universe, sometimes that's how it seems.
I get lost in the sadness and the screams.
Then I look in the center and suddenly everything's clear.
I find myself in the sunshine and my dreams
And I'm looking for space and to find out who I am, and I'm looking to know and understand.
It's a sweet, sweet dream, sometimes I'm almost there.
Sometimes I fly like an eagle and sometimes I'm deep in despair.

On the road of experience, join in the living day.
If there's an answer it's just that it's just that way,
When you're looking for space and to find out who you are.
When you're looking to try and reach the stars.
It's a sweet, sweet dream, sometimes I'm almost there.
Sometimes I fly like an eagle and sometimes I'm deep in despair.

Often, Gloria, your words are better than the accompanying quotes from people of note. I don’t know how you are able to come up with new words of inspiration day after day……but you do.
