Anchored in Stillness and Motion

Note: Some perspectives on island-hopping during the month of June. Destination: Fire Island, NY.

Trying to capture the bliss of Fire Island is like trying to still a sunset. Colors and senses collide. Words feel clumsy and inadequate. But it became my challenge—to stir up and kindle the fires that marinate on that special island. What is it about the salty air? Is it finding yourself in the heaves and swells of the sea? Or is it merely time relinquishing its heavy hand? Or seagulls announcing something big?

On this post, I chose to ponder the island’s interplay of stillness and motion. And I invite you to add your own comments about your own special island.

Scenic harbors straddle the divide between stillness and motion. Its allure rests in the acute awareness of both: knowing where we are anchored and the will to ride the wind.

Our prints may wash away, but our place in the sand is reserved. We return. Tidal. Pulled back again and again, combing the beach for any secrets cast to our shore.
         -----G. Hill
We are like islands in the sea of motion, separate on the surface, but connected in deep stillness.
       ---William James
True power is stillness within motion, yet the good traveler is not intent on arriving, just finding new doorways.

DOORWAYS!!!!!! Fire Island: Window to the sea and Doorways to the Beyond.

Residents on Fire Island know we come from afar to find ourselves at their unique doorsteps, each one with its own special touch. They seem to know we are not defined by imposing boundaries, but by the doors we open. Katherine Dunn wrote, “Every doorway, every intersection has a story.” If so, there are endless stories here to be told. Maybe yours . . .

Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.
              --- Joseph Campbell
Happiness often sneaks in through a doorway you didn't know you left opened.

And always leave room for the whimsical . . .

Seashore Condo Hotel on Fire Island, NY
To Visit Ocean Bay Park on Fire Island:

The Seashore Condo Hotel offers an oasis of rejuvenation and renewal with a front row seat to nature's diversity, glimpses of wildlife, the sounds of the surf, and a wide array of restaurants, bars, shops or nightlife. No cars allowed in this island paradise. Walking or biking, you might be accompanied by a friendly doe and her fawn.

The Seashore Condo Hotel is conveniently located in Ocean Bay Park, Fire Island, just steps from the Bay Shore, Long Island Ferry. Your hosts, Brett and Jeff, will ensure a memorable stay with surprises in every corner. Help yourself to herbs and vegetables grown fresh in the garden to accent your daily catch or steaks on the grill. Check out the bikes, too. My favorite is the Seaside coffee brewed fresh every morning and the new friends we made.

Ferry home, a little bit taller, and not before promising yourself to return. Remember, you are tidal, pulled back again and again.

    1. What a joy to see your name here. Yes, it is a very special place. Country lanes too narrow for cars–only walkers and bikers (and deer). Sending you much joy and love in my heart.
