The Evening Primrose: In the Tranquility of Twilight

Preface: The Evening Primrose is one of 4 flowers that bloom in the twilight of the day. Flowers, often associated with youth, actually represent the full maturation process, not unlike us.

It is now the Tranquility of Twilight, a time to slip into the evening of our bloom.

Nearing the completion of the day, a full maturation of demands and obligations, we begin to think about sinking into our quiet space. Twilight begins that release. Life's toils acquiesce and like the Evening Primrose, we unfold petal by petal until we feel the full bloom of fulfillment. We feel a sense of tranquility as though the day has graced us with its completion.

In the morning there is meaning. In the evening there is the bloom of feeling.
----Gertrude Stein
Sufficiency

They say a farmer's work is never done. How true. I saw it firsthand during my years on our family farm. Everything was in full motion well before I awoke. Our lives were scripted by the demands of the day and plans for tomorrow. Each day seeded our tomorrow and the next tomorrow. Domani. Always more for Domani.

Yet, in the early evening hours, when the day's labor hung on everyone like a heavy overcoat, we would sit around a table of plenty, a spread of steaming bowls of savory food. In this gathering, I could feel our purpose in its full bloom--- a validation of life's intention, which was an abundance of commitments and dedication to each other. and the mere satisfaction of it all.

My small mind wondered. Did the day own us or did we own the day? Twilight seemed to hold the answer. How easy it was for everyone to slip into a feeling of sufficiency. It graced us with a feeling that the mere doings of life, planning, working and loving was enough, even more than enough.

More Than Enough

Thinking my life's work was done, my plan was to live in a forest on a mountain top, just me and my dog. listening to the movement of the trees and eagle wings flying by and I said to myself:

This is enough.

And then my daughter and I returned to my home state in Southern New Jersey, where she met and married the love of her life, someone from my hometown. I knew his family so well I used to babysit his dad. Then came the joy of grandbabies and I said to myself:

This is enough.

And then my old friend Don walked back into my life, bringing a sense of history, roots, my childhood friends, love and music back into my world by introducing me to The Villages, Florida. And I said to myself:

This is enough.

And then I met Judy who invited me to join a group of music makers during the time of COVID. They freely played their melodies outside for any passersby to enjoy, and in whose company, I felt woefully inadequate, but along with their encouragements, I thought to myself,

Just being with them is enough.

And now in the twilight of my life, I see how all these hearts and more came together, seemingly random, yet with purpose, and I say to my God:

Thank you thank you, thank you for a life of plenty.

This is more than enough!
For I have blossomed so much, I am the envy of the gardens.

Primrose Lane is the path we walk together, however steep, however long.
If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.
– Frank A. Clark
Stone pathway named Primrose Lane winding through lush colorful flower beds and rose arch
.
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
– Psalms 16:11
Primrose Lane
Primrose Lane, life's a holiday on Primrose Lane
Just a holiday on Primrose Lane with you
Can't explain when we're walkin' down the Primrose Lane
Even roses bloomin' in the rain with you
.
I wish you the magic of sweet simplicity waiting in the twilight of the day.

Learn the love of labor, to give in plenty, give with love, give without any expectation. One does not lose anything by giving, on the other hand you get back a thousand fold.

Gloria, Thank you for the journey down Primrose Lane and the story of a life well lived. The tune is very familiar and reminds me of when I was infatuated with a young attractive girl who barely knew I existed. I wonder what happened to that young girl.
